NCI Nirin cloud

NCI runs the Nirin research cloud platform for all eligible Australian researchers. It is tightly integrated with NCI’s Gadi HPC and storage infrastructure. All NCI users are eligible to access the Nirin cloud. Details about the platform can be found in NCI’s Nirin user guide.

Apply for Nirin access

To gain access to Nirin you will need:

  • An NCI user name

  • An approved project on NCI (if you do not already have a Gadi project or wish to keep your Nirin project separate from your Gadi project)

  1. (If creating an NCI account or new project) follow instructions here https://sydneyuni.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/RC/pages/3448733944/Sydney+HPC+Scheme#Accessing-NCI

  2. Submit a written proposal to the NCI helpdesk (help@nci.org.au). A description of the contents of this proposal and even an example can be found here: Access to the Nirin Cloud - NCI Help - Opus - NCI Confluence

  3. Once NCI has approved your access, log in to the Nirin web portal at cloud.nci.org.au with your NCI username and password. From there you can set up VMs and log into them with ssh.

Conditions of Nirin access

Some things to consider when using your Nirin project:

  • You will need a Gadi project before setting up a Nirin project

  • You will be charged service units to use Nirin resources so be thoughtful about usage

  • Nirin can access Gadi’s /g/data storage space but not /scratch
