Cryo Electron Microscopy

Cryo electron microscopy involves freezing a thin layer of a macromolecular suspension by plunging it into liquid ethane, and then viewing it frozen in the electron microscope. Freezing the sample quickly without prior chemical fixation has the advantage that the sample is in as native a state as possible, with no fixation artefacts.

The staff at the WRH Electron Microscope Facility can provide a full service for cryo-electron microscopy from negative stain sample screening to cryo sample preparation and digital imaging.
